Unbeknownst to them, their fathers are good friends who decided to lie to their children about a family rivalry so that their children would fall in love. Matt's father Mr. Hucklebee hires El Gallo, who also narrates the musical, to "kidnap" Luisa so that Matt can save her like a hero and prove his worth in front of everybody. However, the fathers and their children begin to realize each others' flaws now that the thrill of the romantic chase is over. Mr. Hucklebee admits that Luisa and Matt's romance was staged by their fathers, and the families begins to feud for real. El Gallo's accomplices Henry and Mortimer lead Matt outside of his hometown, where he sees the harsh realities of adulthood employment. El Gallo begins to flirt with Luisa back home and asks her for her deceased mother's valuable necklace in exchange for a beautiful and glamorous world, while Matt can only offer her his knowledge of the harsh realities of life outside of their small town. The actors asked the audience to imagine elements of its production and they used only a piano and a harp for accompaniment, and following productions have followed suit.
3) Jerry Orbach originated the role of El Gallo in New York, and it was one of his first big roles. He is particularly known for introducing this song.

"Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
The fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December, our hearts should remember
And follow."
