Show Synopsis:
Uncle Fester asks the ancestors of the Addams family to help break up Wednesday Addams and her boyfriend Lucas when he brings his family to dinner at the Addams family?s home. Lucas is normal, which is strange to the creepy Addams family, and his father is snobby and high-strung while his mother is an optimistic poet. His parents begin to argue about their disagreements, and Pugsley steals a potion that will turn Wednesday even darker than she already is, eradicating all her love for Lucas, but accidentally gives it to Lucas?s mother Alice. Wednesday and Lucas announce their engagement and Alice begins to give in to her newfound dark passions. Lucas and Wednesday fight over their parents but make up, while Uncle Fester confesses his love for the moon and Gomez and Morticia reaffirm their love for each other. Lucas?s parents reconcile and everyone celebrates as Fester flies off to be with the moon.

Character:
Wednesday Addams, a sarcastic teenage girl with a love of everything dark, sadistic, pessimistic, and evil; stubborn to a fault and shocked to find herself in love like a normal girl (something she has never been)

Song Context:
Wednesday is playing with Pugsley - which means putting Pugsley into a torture machine and pulling his limbs away from his body - while confessing her confusing feelings about Lucas and love. She is shocked with herself and concerned about telling her family about Lucas and their plans to marry.

Fun Facts:
1. This musical was based on the popular print cartoon series The Addams Family, which has also been adapted into cartoon and live-action movies and television episodes.
2. In an interview with Time Out Chicago, Krysta Rodriguez, who originated the role of Wednesday on Broadway, described the musical as another part of the saga of the Addams Family history in American media. "The conflict of the whole piece is that Wednesday is now a woman and she?s fallen in love with a "normal" kid. His family is invited over to the mansion, and everything unfolds from there. But there?s actually three different love stories in this show. There?s her parents, my parents, and us. Although the parents have been married for years, it doesn?t mean they're not going through their own kind of drama. It's very much a show about love."
3. This musical was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Musical and a Tony Award for Best Original Score.

"I don't have a sunny disposition.
I'm not known for being too amused.
My demeanor's locked in one position.
See my face? I'm enthused.
Suddenly, however, I've been puzzled.
Bunny rabbits make me want to cry.
All my inhibitions have been muzzled,
And I think I know why.

I;m being pulled in a new direction,
But I think I like it.
I think I like it.
I'm being pulled in a new direction.
Through my painful pursuit,
Somehow birdies took root.
All the things I detested impossibly cute.
God! What do I do?
Pulled---

Mother always said be kind to strangers,
But she doesn't know what they destroy.
I can feel the clear and present dangers,
When she learns that the boy
Has got me pulled in a new direction,
But I think I like it.
I think I like it.

I'm being pulled in a new direction,
But this feeling, I know is impossible,
So I'll confide that I've tried but I can't let it go.
It's disgustingly true!
Pulled, pulled, pulled!

Puppy dogs with droopy faces,
Unicorns with dancing mice,
Sunrise in wide open spaces,
Disney World - I'll go there twice!
Butterflies and picnic lunches,
Bunches of chrysanthemums,
Lollipops and pillow fights and christmas eve,
Sugar plums!
String quartets and Chia Pets,
And afternoon banana splits,
Angels watching as I sleep,
And Liberace's Greatest Hits

Have got me pulled in a new direction!
If they keep insisting, I'll stop resisting.
Just watch me pulled in a new direction.
I should stay in the dark,
Not obey every spark,
But the boy has a bite,
Better far than his bark!
And you bet I'll bite too,
Do what's truly taboo,
As I'm pulled in a new direction!"
