Show Synopsis:
Georg Nowack is in love with his pen pal, who happens to be Amalia, his co-worker at a perfume shop, but neither of them are aware that they write to the other. At work, they quarrel, and their friends believe that this is because they have not acknowledged their feelings for each other. Georg learns that his pen pal is Amalia, but instead of coming clean, he taunts her about being in love with someone she has never seen. Amalia starts to fall in love with Georg, and after they get to know each other better, George admits that he has always been Amalia's pen pal, much to her delight.

Character:
Amalia Balash, a lovely young woman who dreams of romance but is incredibly nervous to pursue it.

Song Context:
Amalia tries to write a letter to her ?dear friend? after Georg fabricates a story for why her friend did not meet her at the cafe, but all she can think about is Georg, their great conversation, and the ice cream he brought her when he heard she was sick.

Fun Facts:
1) She Loves Me is based on the play Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo, which has inspired other plays and films - most notably You've Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
2) This musical was nominated for Best Musical and Best Author of a Musical in 1964.
3) Musical theatre historians Ken Bloom and Frank Lastnik wrote that part of this musical?s charm lay in Barbara Cook?s performance as Amalia, as she ?pulled back and drew the audience into her character, allowing her acting to come to the forefront.?

"[Spoken]
Dear Friend...

[Sung]
I am so sorry about last nigh
It was a nightmare in every way,
but together you and I will have
That last night someday ?

Ice cream. He brought me ice cream!
Vanilla Ice cream! Imagine that!
Ice cream, and for the first time,
We were together without a spat!
Friendly, he was so friendly.
That isn't like him. I'm simply stunned.
Will wonders never cease?
Will wonders never cease?
It's been a most peculiar day!
Will wonders never cease?
Will wonders never cease?....

[Spoken]
Oh, where was I?

[Sung]
I am so sorry about last night,
It was a nightmare in every way
But together you
and I will have last night someday!

I sat there waiting in that cafe
And never guessing that you were fat...UGH!
That you were near?
You were outside looking bold...Oh my!

Dear Friend,
I am so sorry about last night....

Last night I was so nasty!
Well, he deserved it but even so,
That George is not like
This George, this is a new George that I don't know.

Somehow it all reminds me
Of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
When right before my eyes
A man that I despise has turned into a man I like!
It's almost like a dream as strange as it may seem...
He came to offer me vanilla ice cream!"
