Wir saßen so traulich beisammen
We sat so cozily together

Im kühlen Erlendach,
In the cool shelter of the Elders

Wir schauten so traulich zusammen
We looked so cozy together

Hinab in den rieselnden Bach.
down in the rippling brook.

Der Mond war auch gekommen,
The moon was also coming

Die Sternlein hinterdrein,
The starlight afterwards,

Und schauten so traulich zusammen
And gazed so cozily together

In den silbernen Spiegel hinein.
in the silver mirror there.

Ich sah nach keinem Monde,
i saw after no moon ( i didn't look at the moon)

Nach keinem Sternenschein,
after no starlight,

Ich schaute nach ihrem Bilde,
I looked after their own image,

Nach ihren Augen allein.
after her eyes alone.
Und sahe sie nicken und blicken
And I saw them nod and gaze
 
Herauf aus dem seligen Bach,
up from the blissful brook,

Die Blümlein am Ufer, die blauen,
The little flowers on the shore, the blues

Sie nickten und blickten ihr nach.
They nodded and gazed right back.

Und in den Bach versunken
and in the brook submerged

Der ganze Himmel schien
The whole sky seemed
 
Und wollte mich mit hinunter
and wanted me with down
 
In seine Tiefe ziehn.
it its depths draw. 
(and wanted to draw me under into its depths )

Und über den Wolken und Sternen,
and around the clouds and stars,

Da rieselte munter der Bach
There trickled merrily the brook

Und rief mit Singen und Klingen:
and called with singing and ringing:

Geselle, Geselle, mir nach!
Friend, Friend, me after! (follow me!)

Da gingen die Augen mir über,
Then came forth the eyes me over, (overflowed)

Da ward es im Spiegel so kraus;
since it was in the mirror so blurry;

Sie sprach: Es kommt ein Regen,
She spoke: it comes the rain, (the rain is coming)

Ade, ich geh nach Haus.
Farewell, I?m going home.
