Show Synopsis:
A drunken washed up actor named Norman winds up drunk and onstage one night, only to be saved by the kindness of the singer Esther. Norman convinces Esther to become an actress, but suddenly leaves to film a movie with no way to contact her. Years later, he hears her voice in a commercial, tracks her down, and advises her to change her name to Vicki. They get married, but Nick is frustrated with his lack of a career and turns to alcohol. When Vicki wins an Oscar, he accidentally punches her in the face and decides to go to rehab. When he gets out, Norman gets arrested for drunkenly fighting another man and Vicki decides to leave acting to focus on taking care of him. Norman hates what alcohol has done to him and drowns himself in the ocean. Vicki is inconsolable for a long time, then agrees to do a charity function and sees a heart on the wall that Norman drew for her the night they met. She introduces herself to the crowd as ?Mrs. Norman Maine."

"The night is bitter,
The stars have lost their glitter,
The winds grow colder
And suddenly you're older,
And all because of the man that got away.
No more his eager call,
The writing's on the wall,
The dreams you dreamed have all
Gone astray.

The man that won you
Has gone off and undone you.
That great beginning
Has seen the final inning.
Don't know what happened.

It's all a crazy game!
No more that all-time thrill,
For you've been through the mill,
And never a new love will
Be the same.

Good riddance, good-bye!
Ev'ry trick of his you're on to.
But, fools will be fools,
And where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher,
It's lonelier and tougher.
With hope you burn up,
Tomorrow he may turn up.

There's just no letup the live-long night and day!
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one-man woman looking for
The man that got away,
The man that got away. "
