Show Synopsis: Seventeen dancers share their hopes, dreams, and memories of stage business, love, and family as they audition for eight spots in the chorus of a new show directed by Zach. He tries to come to terms with his former love Cassie, whose career went downhill out in Hollywood, and who he does not want to cast because she is more talented than the other auditionees. When one dancer gets injured, the rest of them realize how lucky they are that they can keep doing what they love. At the end, only eight of them can be chosen for Zach's new Broadway show, but they all get to dance a Broadway finale. Character: Cassie, a young woman who has failed to make it as an actress in California and wants to return to her dancing roots in New York; has been humbled by her experiences in Hollywood but knows that she is talented enough to make it on the stage; loves Zach and would like to rekindle their romance, but loves performing more than anything else. Song Context: Zach confronts Cassie on why she has come to audition for his musical and tries to convince her she is too talented to take an ensemble role. Fun Facts: 1) The stories and songs of A Chorus Line were based on the actors' actual memories and stories, and the book and lyrics were developed after conversations between them and the creative team. 2) The entire cast won a Theatre World Award for Best Ensemble for their performances in this ensemble piece of musical theatre. 3) The character of Cassie was based on Donna McKechnie, who originated the role on Broadway. In an interview with BroadwayWorld.Com, she said that the performance of this character had to be centered around ?her achievements and her maturity and her experience; her presence onstage.? She also described Cassie and Zach?s relationship as her saying ??I can fit in!? and he?s saying, ?No, you can?t!? A lot of the reason he can't see her there is because he still loves her and he has put her on another plateau. She's having an argument with him that he's not having with her.?
"Give me somebody to dance for, Give me somebody to show. Let me wake up in the morning to find I have somewhere exciting to go. To have something that I can believe in. To have something to be. Use me... Choose me. God, I'm a dancer, A dancer dances! Give me somebody to dance with. Give me a place to fit in. Help me return to the world of the living By showing me how to begin. Play the music. Give me the chance to come through. All I ever needed was the music, and the mirror, And the chance to dance for you. Give me a job and you instantly get me involved. If you give me a job, Then the rest of the crap will get solved. Put me to work, You would think that by now I'm allowed. I'll do you proud. Throw me a rope to grab on to. Helpome to prove that I'm strong. Give me the chance to look forward to sayin': ""Hey. listen, they're playing my song."" Play me the music. Give me the chance to come through. All I ever needed was the music, and the mirror, And the chance to dance... Play me the music, Play me the music, Play me the music. Give me the chance to come through. All I ever needed was the music, and the mirror, And the chance to dance."
