* This birthdate according to The New Grove?s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (Macmillan, London, 1980, ed. Stanley Sadie). The date of 1659 given in the Schirmer anthologies 24 Italian Songs and Arias and Anthology of Italian Song (and in the Ricordi 30 Arie Antiche Vol. 1) has since been revised by more recent scholarship.

N. B. This recording features the version of ?Gia il sole? that appears in the Schirmer edition of 24 Italian Songs and Arias. The original (1680) version, which is reprinted in the John Glenn Paton (ed.) edition of 26 Italian Songs and Arias, is so markedly different that it cannot be used effectively with the present recording.

Gia il sole dal Gange
Already the sun [from]-(over)-the Ganges

piu chiaro sfavilla
more bright(ly) sparkles

e terge ogni stilla dell'alba, che piange.
and dries every drop of-the-dawn, which weeps.

Col raggio dorato
With-[the] (a) ray gilded

ingemma ogni stelo
it-adorns (with gems) every blade (of grass)

e gli astri del cielo
and the stars of-the sky

dipinge nel prato.
it-paints in-the field.
