Show Synopsis: Five performers perform the songs of Thomas "Fats" Waller and celebrate his rise to fame from the big bands of the Cotton Club in Harlem. They celebrate all over New York City and question their love lives with his music, and try to address the heartache that lies beneath all of Waller's music. Characters: Nell, a young African-American performer who wants a healthy romantic relationship. Song Context: As the party winds down, Nell starts to question her boyfriend?s true intentions and wonders if he really loves her. Fun Facts: 1. The concept for this musical originated when Murray Horwitz asked Richard Maltby, Jr. to listen to some rare Waller recordings and Maltby heard the wit and and spirit in the music that he felt could translate into a musical. 2. The names of the characters are the same as the actors who originated them, and this song was sung by Nell Carter in the original production. 3. Carter won Drama Desk and Tony Awards for her performance in the musical. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the televised broadcast of the musical.
