Show Synopsis: Jack Chesney, a graduating Oxford student, is excited to see his girlfriend this weekend because his roommate Charley?s aunt will be there to chaperone then. Unfortunately, Charley mistakes the time of his aunt?s train, and the girls arrive and have to leave because they won?t stay without a female chaperone - especially Amy, who is afraid of her strict uncle Mr. Spettigue. Jack?s father Sir Francis comes and tells him that their family is penniless, and Jack tells him maybe he could think about marrying Charley?s wealthy Aunt Donna. Charley tries on his elderly woman costume for a student play as the boys find out that Aunt Donna will not be coming today. Charley decides to pose as Aunt Donna in his costume so that Jack will have the chance to propose to Kitty, and fools everyone. Sir Francis comes to escort Aunt Donna to lunch, and Mr. Spettigue decides to try and woo her too. After lunch, Charley changes clothes to spend some time with Amy. Kitty and Jack declare their love for each other, and Sir Francis tells Jack he wants to marry Aunt Donna. Charley tries to talk to Amy about having a future together but she is more consumed with the world at large. Mr. Spettigue tells Amy they are leaving, but Charley wants more time with her and tells Mr. Spettigue that Aunt Donna will be down soon to tell him she loves him. Charley dresses up as Aunt Donna and both older men try to declare their love. The real Aunt Donna arrives and begins to flirt with Sir Francis, whom she knew a long time ago, but he does not know she is the real Aunt Donna. When she realizes something funny is going on, she poses as Beverly Smythe to keep it going. Charley discovers that the girls need written consent from Mr. Spettigue to get engaged, and Amy wonders why Charley is acting so strange, thinking he has another girl. After a madcap tea with everyone, Charley takes his graduation photo, and Amy tells him Mr. Spettigue needs Aunt Donna to get his consent for her engagement. As the ladies leave for a dance, Charley fights off Mr. Spettigue and tells him ?she? needs written consent for Kitty and Amy?s engagements if he wants her to marry him. Everyone dances until Mr. Spettigue returns with the letter, and eventually Charley reveals the ruse, which Charley insists he did out of love for Amy. The real Aunt Donna shows that the document of consent is legal and legitimate, so Mr. Spettigue can?t dispute the girls? engagements. Character: Charley Wykeham, a young and charming soon-to-be Oxford graduate; very clever and feckless. Song Context: Charley learns that he is one step closer to being engaged to the love of his life, Amy - he just needs to be Aunt Donna to get the consent form from Mr. Spettigue. "Once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy, Ever and ever fascinated by her, Sets your heart afire to stay. Once you're kissed by Amy, Tear up your list, it's Amy. Ply her with bonbons, poetry and flowers, Moon a million hours away. You might be quite the fickle-hearted rover, So carefree and bold Who loves a girl and later thinks it over And just quits cold. But once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy, Ever and ever sweetly you'll romance her - Trouble is the answer will be That Amy'd rather stay in love with me.
