The trout

In einem Bächlein helle, da schoß in froher Eil'
In a little brook bright there darted in happy hurry

Die launische Forelle vorüber wie ein Pfeil.
The spirited trout along like an arrow.

Ich stand an dem Gestade und sah in süßer Ruh'
I stood at the shore and watched in sweet repose

Des muntern Fischleins Bade im klaren Bächlein zu.
The merry little fish?s bath in the clear little brook.

Ein Fischer mit der Rute wohl an dem Ufer stand
A fisherman with the fishing rod well at the bank stood

Und sah?s mit kaltem Blute, wie sich das Fischlein wand.
And saw it with cold blood how itself the little fish moved.

So lang' dem Wasser Helle, so dacht' ich, nicht gebricht,
As long as the water brightness, so thought I, (does) not lack,

So fängt er die Forelle mit seiner Angel nicht.
So catches he the trout with his fishing rod not.

Doch endlich ward dem Diebe die Zeit zu lang.
But finally became to the thief the time too long,

Er macht das Bächlein tückisch trübe, 
He made the brook cunningly murky

Und eh' ich es gedacht,
And before I it thought (realized),

So zuckte seine Rute, das Fischlein zappelt dran,
So jerked his fishing rod, the little fish wriggling on it.

Und ich mit regem Blute sah die Betrog'ne an.
And I with stirred-up blood looked the deceived one at.
