Der Nußbaum
The nut tree

Es grünet ein Nußbaum vor dem Haus,
It grows a nut tree in front of the house,

Duftig, luftig breitet er blättrig die Äste aus.
Fragrantly, airily spreads he full of leaves the branches outward.

Viel liebliche Blüten stehen d'ran;
Many lovely blossoms stand on them (branches);

Linde Winde kommen, sie herzlich zu umfahn. 
Soft breezes come, them dearly to embrace.

Es flüstern je zwei zu zwei gepaart, 
It whisper always two to two coupled, 
 
Neigend, beugend zierlich zum Kusse die Häuptchen zart.
Bending, bowing daintily to the kiss the little heads tenderly.

Sie flüstern von einem Mägdlein,
They whisper of a girl,

Das dächte die Nächte und Tage lang, wußte ach! selber nicht was.
That thought the nights and days long, knew alas, herself not what.

Sie flüstern, sie flüstern, wer mag verstehn so gar leise Weis??
They whisper, they whisper, who may understand such very soft melody?

Flüstern von Bräut'gam und nächstem Jahr, vom nächstem Jahr.
Whisper of bridegroom and next year, of the next year.

Das Mägdlein horchet, es rauscht im Baum;
The girl listens, it rustles in the tree;

Sehnend wähnend sinkt es lächelnd in Schlaf und Traum.
Longing, imagining sinks it (she) smiling into sleep and dream.
