J'ai longtemps habité sous de vastes portiques
I have for a long time lived beneath the vast porticoes

Que les soleils marins teignaient de mille feux,
That the suns of the sea have dyed with a thousand fires,

Et que leurs grands piliers, droits et majestueux,
And whose great pillars, straight and majestic,

Rendaient pareils, le soir, aux grottes basaltiques.
Resemble it seems, at night, the caves of basalt.

Les houles, en roulant les images des cieux,
The swells, while rolling the images of the sky,

Mêlaient d'une façon solennelle et mystique
Mingle in a way solemn and mystic

Les tout puissants accords de leur riche musique
The most powerful agreements (harmonies) of their rich music

Aux couleurs du couchant reflété par mes yeux...
With the colors of the sunset reflected in my eyes.. . 

C'est là, c'est là que j'ai vécu dans les voluptés calmes
It is there that I have lived in sensuous calm

Au milieu de l'azur, des vagues, des splendeurs,
In the midst of the azure, the waves, the splendor 

Et des esclaves nus tout imprégnés d'odeurs
And the slaves naked all soaked in fragrance 

Qui me rafraîchissaient le front avec des palmes,
Who me cooled the brow with the palms,

Et dont l'unique soin était d'approfondir
And whose only reason for being was to know more

Le secret douloureux qui me faisait languir.
The secret sadness that made me languish.
