Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn,
Know you the land, where the lemons bloom,

Im dunklen Laub die Gold Orangen glühn,
In the dark leaves the gold oranges glow,

Ein sanfter Wind vom blauen Himmel weht,
A soft breeze from the blue sky wafts,

Die Myrte still und hoch der Lorbeer steht?
The myrtle quietly and high the laurel stands?

Kennst du es wohl? 
Know you it well?

Dahin! Dahin möcht ich mit dir, o mein Geliebter, ziehn.
There! To there want I with you, oh my beloved, travel.

Kennst du das Haus? Auf Säulen ruht sein Dach,
Know you the house? On columns rests its roof,

Es glänzt der Saal, es schimmert das Gemach,
It shines the hall, it gleams the chamber,

Und Marmorbilder stehn und sehn mich an;
And marble images stand and look at me;

Was hat man dir, du armes Kind, getan?
What has one to you, you poor child, done?

Kennst du den Berg und seinen Wolkensteg?
Know you the mountain and his cloud path?

Das Maultier sucht im Nebel seinen Weg;
The mule seeks in the fog its way;

In Höhlen wohnt der Drachen alte Brut,
In caves dwell the dragons ancient brood,
 
Es stürzt der Fels und über ihn die Flut.
It falls the rock and over it the flood.
