Show Synopsis: Throughout the many incarnations of this musical, the general story has remained the same: Billy Crocker loves Hope Harcourt, but their romance is complicated by her mother Evangeline, who wants her to marry Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. They all end up on a boat to London, along with a group of gangsters and entertainers, particularly the singer Reno Sweeney, and highjinks ensue. By the end of the voyage, Billy and Hope have married, as have Reno and Lord Evelyn. Character: Reno Sweeney, a sexy woman in her 30s who works as a nightclub singer; a former evangelist; very charismatic; in love with Billy but mostly would like a marriage with any decent man. Song Context: Reno is trying to convince Billy that she loves him and they should be together before he goes chasing after Hope, who he barely knows. Fun Facts: 1. The character of Reno was based in part on the evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. 2. Ethel Merman originated the role on Broadway and in the first film adaptation of the musical, and it was the first of five Cole Porter musicals she would star in. 3. Patti LuPone revived the role of Reno on Broadway in 1987, who described the score of the show to be "infectious" and "fantastic."
"My story is much too sad to be told, But practically everything leaves me totally cold. The exception I know is the case When I'm out on a quiet spree, Fighting vainly the old ennui, And I suddenly turn and see your fabulous face. I get no kick from champagne. Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all. So tell me why should it be true That I get a kick out of you? Some, they may go for cocaine. I'm sure that if I took even one sniff It would bore me terrifically, too. Yet I get a kick out of you. I get a kick every time I see You standing there before me. I get a kick though it's clear to see You obviously do not adore me. I get no kick in a plane. Flying too high with some gal in the sky Is my idea of nothing to do. Yet I get a kick - um you give me a boot - I get a kick out of you."
