Description
The Juilliard School’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts seeks applicants for
Associate Coach, Vocal Arts beginning in Fall 2022. The successful candidate will be an exceptional musician with a strong background in collaborative piano and extensive experience working with all levels of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate classical singers, preferably in an educational environment. The candidate will have a deep knowledge of vocal repertoire (opera, art song, etc.) from all eras and demonstrate a commitment to exploring and teaching repertoire by underrepresented composers. This position works closely with the Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director for the Master of Music and Graduate Diploma (MM/GD) Program, Associate Artistic Director for the Bachelor of Music (BM) Program, and members of the Vocal Arts Staff to ensure that students are receiving an appropriate, well-rounded, individualized, and equitable artistic and educational experience. This is a 9-month, full-time position on the Vocal Arts faculty.
Responsibilities (essential functions):
Lead weekly individual curricular coachings with undergraduate students in rotation/coordination with the Associate Artistic Director, Undergraduate
Lead weekly general coachings with students from all degree programs
Serve as Associate Music Preparation Coach on 1-2 opera productions as assigned per year
Serve as Chorus Master for Juilliard Opera productions as applicable
Serve as pianist for Vocal Arts classes (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, artist diploma acting classes), high level department auditions, rehearsals, and coachings with Vocal Arts diction and dramatic faculty as appropriate
Serve as pianist for annual Voice Admissions Entrance Auditions
Working closely with the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Directors, track student progress development and provide advisement (i.e. as member of Student Exchange meetings)
Work with Vocal Arts Piano Fellow(s) on aspects of technical skills, art of vocal coaching, score preparation, etc. as appropriate
Qualifications:
Artist coach with significant reputation working with classical singers in vocal music, with a demonstrated track record of teaching young vocal artists. Experience working in an academic environment or with young artists a plus.
Master’s or equivalent graduate degree in a field related to vocal coaching or classical music and/ or have a minimum of 5 years of experience coaching at the post-secondary and/or professional level.
Extensive knowledge of vocal repertoire (opera, art song, etc.) from all eras
Capacity to teach a diverse student body of the highest quality
Knowledge of the current trends in collegiate voice programs and the profession
Exceptional judgement, discretion, and integrity when working with students in an educational environment
Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and the mission of The Juilliard School
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
