Competition Second Round

In order to receive a Second Round time, you need to first confirm your participation via your CSmusic.net account or by emailing katie@csmusic.net.

If you have challenging music you can submit your selections to the pianists on the Repertoire Request Form.

Thursday, May 23 – Saturday, May 25

  • ***IMPORTANT DETAILS***
    • TWO song selections are required for the Second Round.
    • Bring a word-processed repertoire list with the singer’s name and the titles and composers of the selections for the judges.
    • Original music is not required, but make sure the copied music you bring for the accompanist is in a three-ringed binder (no loose copies of music) in non glare sheet protectors or taped edges (absolutely no staples).
    • You may bring your own accompanist or use the one provided, but there will be no time to practice with the accompanist beforehand.
    • Practice rooms will be available, but these rooms do not include pianos.
    • You may use the same selections as you did in the First Round.
    • You will have approximately 7 minutes of performance time:
      • One selection of your choice
      • If time remains, a portion of the second selection
  • Other Details
    • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
    • Out of 1,300 singers from the First Round, approximately 600-700 singers participate in the Second Round:
      • 350 High School Divisions
      • 200 University Divisions
      • 150 Young Artist/Emerging Professional Divisions
    • Depending on the size of the division, approximately 14-40 singers will advance to the Semifinal Round from each division.
    • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

 

Competition Semifinal Round

Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26

  • Musical Theatre Divisions
    • Saturday, May 25, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Classical Divisions
    • Sunday, May 26, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Format and Details
    • Singers perform ONE song selection of their choice in its entirety.
    • Repertoire can be used from previous rounds.
    • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
    • The top 5-10 singers in each division will advance to the Final Round.
    • Winners will be notified via email and a list will be posted near the Convention Registration Desk as soon as possible after the round is complete.
    • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

Competition Final Round

Sunday, May 26

  • Musical Theatre Divisions
    • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon
  • Classical Divisions
    • 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Format and Details
    • The Final Round will be in the Chicago Ballroom on the 4th Floor.
    • Formal attire is appropriate for the Final Round, though not required.
    • Each singer will perform one song selection of their choice in its entirety.
    • It is recommended to use the same selection from the Semifinal Round.
    • Winners will be announced at the Grand Finale Awards Concert at 7:00 p.m.
    • The First Place winner of each division will perform their winning selection at the Awards Concert.

 

Convention Grand Finale Awards Concert

Sunday, May 26, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

  • The winners of each division will be announced during the Awards Concert.
  • The First Place winner of each division will perform their winning selection.
  • Formal attire is appropriate for the Final Round, though not required.
  • Scholarships will be awarded during the concert for both Classical and Musical Theatre categories in all divisions.

Convention Classes

Every Competition participant receives a FREE Convention Pass that gets them into every Convention Class and event. No extra registration is needed.

Thursday, May 23 – Sunday, May 26 

  • High School, University, and Emerging Professional Classes
  • Top faculty members from the participating Expo schools and Exhibitors will present more than 100 masterclasses and workshops.
  • No pre-registration necessary for the classes; attend as many as you want.
    • Classes are free to attend for competition participants.
    • To sing in a masterclass:
  • Topics include Professional Role Auditions, College Auditions, Repertoire Choices, Healthy Technique, Mental, Musical, and Vocal Preparation, Choosing the Right School, Business of Singing, and more.

Expo Recruiting Fair

Friday, May 24 – Sunday, May 26
(Free for all Competition participants; no additional registration necessary.)

  • Meet with undergraduate and graduate representatives from premier vocal programs as you find the right school for you. Faculty and admission officers from more than 70 of the top schools in the nation will be at the Expo to help you find the school that fits you the best.
  • Who’s coming?
    • Eastman, New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, UCLA, San Francisco, BYU, Michigan, and dozens of others.

      • Note: Schools don’t always stay for all three days of the Expo, so be sure to check the exhibit hall each day for the schools of your choice.
