Tis' the Season! (for auditions)

“Every artist was first an amateur.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been adjudicating many auditions like the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Auditions plus many others for years now and just returned from doing just that – the Met Auditions in San Diego.

I always wonder what purpose each contestant has in mind as they present themselves. How do they prepare themselves, mentally spiritually, physically for this event? How do they pick their arias and what to wear? Whose advice do they seek in putting their package together? What is their #1 most important thought the moment before they step on stage? What is their agenda consist of from that moment, to the moment they are once again off stage? What process do they go through as they consider their performance once it is over? Do they have a method of staying in touch with the judges as they follow through when thoughts or questions concerning their performance arise after the audition? Do they take to heart what the judges say to them during their time together after the auditions are over and use this information to help them improve and grow as an artist? Or do they just go back to what they have always done?

So I would like to ask you, what are your 5 most important points for getting ready for an audition? What is your agenda during the event? Do you intend to use your introduction to the judges as a source of mentorship and help in preparation for your next audition?

You know what I think. Now let me know what you think about this important stepping stone on your career path. Contact me at carol@ariaready.net. I really want to hear from you.

Carol Kirkpatrick

For as long as she can remember, singing and performing have always been in Carol Kirkpatrick’s blood. From her beginnings in a small farming town in southeastern Arizona, through her early first-place triumph at the prestigious San Francisco Opera Auditions, and subsequent career on international stages, Ms. Kirkpatrick has thrilled audiences and critics alike. “A major voice, one worth the whole evening.” (The New York Times) Since retiring from the stage, she continues to be in demand as a voice teacher, clinician, and adjudicator of competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.  Combining her knowledge of performance, business, and interpersonal skills, she has written the second edition of her highly regarded book, Aria Ready: The Business of Singing, a step-by-step career guide for singers and teachers of singing.  Aria Ready has been used by universities, music conservatories and summer and apprentice programs throughout the world as a curriculum for teaching Ms. Kirkpatrick’s process of career development, making her “the” expert in this area.  She lives in Denver, Colorado.   YouTube.com/kirkpatrickariaready
