Roosevelt University - Classical & Musical Theatre Masterclass

Presenter: Dana Brown

Dr. Dana Brown is the Associate Professor of Opera and Vocal Coaching at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where he has taught and coached since 2001. At CCPA he musically directs opera, coaches graduate and undergraduates in the vocal performance programs, and teaches singer-specific classes in diction, art song literature and business practices. He has also worked for the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where he played for masterclasses with Renée Fleming and lessons for Marilyn Horne and Renata Scotto.

Dr. Joshua May will present a masterclass on the foundations of voice building through functional training. This class is open to all high school, undergraduate, and graduate singers to participate. Participants are welcome to bring a diverse array of repertoire for their work in this masterclass to explore developing vocal technique, style, and language elements together for performance success.

Presenter: Joshua May

Dr. Joshua May, tenor, is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of Opera Activities at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. He has performed and premiered works throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. He has been selected as a national finalist for the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize for Stage Directors in both opera and musical theatre by the American Prize. Presenter: Kurt Hansen

Coordinator, voice and opera program. Tenor. Kurt Hansen ’83 MMus is a specialist in oratorio, most notably the J. S. Bach Passions. He has performed as a soloist in Europe, South America, Asia, and the United States, including engagements with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti and Claudio Abbado, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Music of the Baroque. Also a frequent recitalist and performer in opera, Hansen has recorded on the Lyra label with Music of the Baroque and Colorado Mahlerfest.

Presenter: John De Haan

Experienced international operatic tenor, John David De Haan, turns his energies to teaching young, talented singers.  John is a native of Kansas and a graduate of Union College and of the University of Nebraska where he earned his Master of Music degree. He is a winner of the prestigious Eleanor Steber Music Foundation Mozart Award and a former Adler Fellow with the San Francisco Opera. He is currently on the voice and opera faculty at University of Minnesota’s School of Music in Minneapolis where he resides with his wife and two daughters.

Presenter: Valerie Trujillo

Pianist Valerie Trujillo, has served on the staffs at Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Wexford Festival Opera (Ireland), Chautauqua Opera, Ohio Light Opera and others. She was artist faculty at the Tanglewood Music Center, Ars Vocalis México (Mexico), Taos Opera Institute, Si parla, si canta (Italy). A NATS Master Teacher for the 2020 and 2021 NATS Intern Program, she can be heard on the Chandos, Mark Records, Albany and Azica labels. Ms. Trujillo received her training from Eastern New Mexico University and the University of Illinois. She teaches on the faculty at Florida State University as Professor of Accompanying

Presenter: Rachel Joselson

Rachel Joselson performed as an opera singer in Europe from 1982-93. After returning to the U.S., she was engaged with the Metropolitan Opera, regional opera companies, and numerous symphony orchestras. She has adjudicated various competitions and given master classes both nationally and abroad. In addition to performing and teaching, she has numerous CD recordings of German, French, English and Israeli song repertoire. Joselson received her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Rutgers University. She has been on the faculty at the University of Iowa since 1997.

About the Gunns

Julie and Nathan Gunn are the co-directors of the trail-blazing Lyric Theatre @ Illinois, a comprehensive program stressing wellness, flexibility and creativity. They have been connecting with audiences in opera, musical theatre, recital and cabaret for 25 years.performed on many of the world’s most prestigious recital series, with major opera, musical theater and classical artists, and her husband and artistic partner Nathan Gunn.  As co-Director of LyricTheatre@Illinois, she produces several operas or musical theatre works a year at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.  She enjoys teaching performance, composition, and production, and conducting sung theatre.  She is particularly committed to new works as a co-producer, a pianist, or as a conductor.  The Gunns’ production company, Shot in the Dark Productions Inc, engages with communities all over the United States to celebrate American music.

While technical interventions are important, imagination is the key ingredient that unifies the physical and mental aspects of singing, enabling you to give exciting performances.

Presenter: André Campelo

Baritone André Campelo is an enthusiastic recitalist having performed major works such as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Bach’s B minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, and Magnificat. Among his favorite recital appearances are the great German song cycles: Winterreise, Schwanengesang (Schubert), Dichterliebe op. 48, Liederkreis op. 39 (Schumann). He also performed solo recitals in Brazil, Panama, and Portugal. His stage performances include roles in South Pacific (Émile de Becque), Così fan tutte (Don Alfonso and Guglielmo), The Tales of Hoffmann (the Four Villains), and The Marriage of Figaro (Count Almaviva).

Presenter: JR Fralick

JR Fralick has performed in opera, recitals, and with orchestras from South Africa to Israel, Italy to the United Kingdom. He has earned Vocologist certification through the National Center for Voice, and coordinates the Vocal Pedagogy Emphasis at Baldwin Wallace. His greatest passion is teaching voice. His students have gone on to sing with professional opera companies, on Broadway and London’s West End, and with major symphony orchestras.

Presenters: Bill Hudson and Ingrid Kammin

Dr. Hudson currently teaches applied voice and vocal pedagogy at Illinois Wesleyan University where he is also the Head of the Voice and Choral area. He is the current Illinois District Governor of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. His students have gone on to be accepted into many of the nation’s best graduate programs.

Ingrid Kammin, soprano, received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Illinois. Ingrid is an active performer and researcher of contemporary music, opera, and musical theater.

Presenter: Kirsten Gunlogson

Grammy nominated Mezzo-Soprano Kirsten Gunlogson’s voice has been described as “rich”, “creamy” and “beautifully dramatic”. Known for her convincing interpretation of trouser roles and charmingly feminine portrayals Ms. Gunlogson has distinguished herself as an impressive singing actress. Recent performances include a solo concert with the OMSK Philharmonic in OMSK, Russia, the roles of Mother, Chinese Tea Cup and Dragonfly in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges with Utah Symphony, the role of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with Baltimore Lyric Opera, Nashville Opera, and Opera Columbus as well as the role of Ma Joad in Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath with Anchorage Opera.

Palm Beach Atlantic University - Multiple Styles/One Technique!
Gold Coast Room

Technique and style very often have interchangeable definitions. Technique is “how” to play your instrument. “Style” is what you do with your instrument. This class will explore the commonalities in using the voice despite differing style requirements.

Presenter: S. Mark Aliapoulios

S. Mark Aliapoulios, Professor of Voice and Associate Dean at Palm Beach Atlantic University College of the Arts in Florida, holds degrees from University of Miami and New England Conservatory. He has taught at several universities including Boston University, UM and New England Conservatory. He has sung as soloist with the Boston Symphony, the Opera Company of Boston, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Shinsei Nippon Symphony (Tokyo), and the Miami Bach Society among others. Competition credits include the NATS Artists Awards, the Opera Company of Boston Guild Auditions, and the Liederkranz Foundation Awards. Under his baton, the Florida International University Choir received a Latin Grammy nomination for their recording of “Aushwitz: nunca se olvidaràn”.

Grand Canyon University - Bones for Life: A Gentle Somatic Intervention for Singers

As singers, “proper posture and alignment” are the gold standard, in order to improve our overall instrument, and therefore our sound. But, HOW do we improve the awareness of our alignment, so that we can find it on our own in the practice room? Bones for Life® was created by Ruthy Alon, and goals of the program are to stimulate bone strength, improve functional walking, align posture toward upright, develop equilibrium, and enhance pleasurable movement.

Presenter: Rachel Valverde


Dr. Rachel Velarde, mezzo-soprano, is Professor of Music (Voice) at Grand Canyon University. Her main areas of interest are vocal performance, voice literature, voice science, and voice pedagogy. She began teaching private voice and piano lessons in 1993 and became a member of NATS in 1996, serving 3 terms as Valley of the Sun NATS Chapter President and four years as NATS Arizona District Governor. In leadership roles with NATS and the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA), she networks with voice professionals throughout the country, including in her current role as PAVA’s Membership Director. Rachel appreciates growing community influences through sharing information and connecting people. A 2017 CoreSinging® graduate, Rachel is actively pursuing Bones for Life® teacher certification, a program of somatic awareness developed by Ruthy Alon and inspired by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. Her specific interest in Feldenkrais® began after her experiences with muscle tension dysphonia in spring 2019. She expects her teacher training to be completed in fall 2021 and implements her Bones for Life understandings in the voice studio, as inspired by the principles of CoreSinging.
